Steel Magnolias tells the story of a close-knit group of friends in northwest Louisiana who find sanctuary in Truvy's beauty parlor. With their weekly visits to the salon. I worked closely with sound designer Jane Shaw to implement and maintain her design for the run of the show. My responsibilities included mixing the show, loading in and rigging the entire sound system, testing and troubleshooting the sound system once implemented, setting up coms, setting up tech tables, taking inventory of all sound equipment in the theatre.

Load-in
As Steel Magnolias was the first show of Theatre Aspen's 2024 summer season, the system needed to be implemented. The speakers were rigged first and the cables were ran to them from the amplifiers. The A2 station was established backstage and routed to the sound board via a 150ft analog snake. The sound board and FOH computer were implemented last and inputs and outputs were routed to the amplifiers. Any mistakes in routing were quickly addressed and fixed before tech rehearsal started.
Performances
When shows were underway, I developed a system with the A2 to do a mic check and speaker check prior to every show. This reduced risk of any technical failings happening during the show. Since theatre was a large tent, rain would often interfere with the performance, leading me to adjust levels during performances with minimal effect on board programming.
