A2/Deck Sound

Legally Blonde tells the story of a UCLA student trying to re-earn the love of her ex-boyfriend by getting into Harvard Law School. I worked closely with the sound designer Megumi Katayama to implement and maintain the sound design for the show's entire run. Responsibilities included setting up RF land, assisting the sound designer and sound supervisor with system adjustments, creating microphone rigs, setting up video equipment, setting up the band area, and communicating with actors about microphone placements to maintain consistent and high-quality sound throughout performances.

Shop Prep

When changing over from the previous production, there was only one day for quiet time and equipment preparation before technical rehearsal. The actors' ear rigs and wig mics were finished (the ear rigs were fitted beforehand during rehearsals), RF Land was set up, the band area was set up, a video feed of the Musical Director for the actors was established, and the system was adjusted. When prepping transmitter packs, the Broadway standard of electrical tape backing with transparent tape as a top seal was used to enclose the label.

Performances

During technical rehearsal, I developed a system that allowed me to work efficiently when shows were underway. I created an actor mic bible that told me the actor's needs and I arranged my actor mics to distribute them to the actor trailers faster.

Throughout the show's run, there were moments when cast members fell ill and when a walk-on would appear, requiring  new ear rigs to be created. Illness was a challenge to overcome, as that required giving extra care to the actor mics to maintain a healthy work environment. The actor replacements would mean communicating with them to understand their needs to help them settle in.
