Come From Away is a story about the town of Gander in Newfoundland, which took in 7,000 people from diverted planes after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. I worked with sound designer Forrest Gregor to implement and maintain his design for the run of performances. Responsibilities included mixing the show, setting up in-ear monitors and wireless transmitters for the bands' wireless instruments, setting up tech tables, providing video feeds of the musical director for the actors drummer, and stage manager, marking the script as desired by the sound designer, and making adjustments to TheatreMix during tech for proper DCA and band console programming.

Shop Prep

The changeover from the previous production took two days. During this time, the band area was set up, the in-ear monitor system was loaded in, the system was tuned and adjusted, and the main mixing console/band mixing console were programmed. When setting up the band, the drummers' position was moved per request of the director so that the drums would not acoustically bleed into the theatre and affect the mix. This posed a problem as the new location isolated the drummer from the rest of the band. As a solution, the drummer was given a conductor monitor to recieve cues from the music director.

Performances

During tech rehearsal, I made notes on the script that told me what level the main band fader would be at during songs and underscoring. This way, I would understand when to let the music or the dialogue tell the story. Come From Away is a fast-paced show, making it difficult to mix. Before previews, I worked with the sound designer and the sound supervisor to use multitrack recordings of preview performances to practice mixing difficult sections. Since the theatre building is a large tent, rain often interfered with performances, leading me to adjust levels during the show with minimal effect on board programming.
